How Will the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act Affect You?

Health Care: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care act and you.

President Barack Obama signed into effect the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) on March, 23, 2010 in which is now live in our current year. Many have nicknamed this new health care law “Obama Care” or “The Health care reform”. There are many different ideas of what this will entail floating around out there and as your Dermatology office of choice we wanted to clear any misunderstandings that you may have.

What does the Patient Protection and Affordable Care act mean for you: There are many new provisions that can be very helpful and some of those include allowing young adults to stay on their health insurance plan until they are 26 regardless of student status; Also It stops insurance companies from choosing to drop you once you become sick, or if you make an honest mistake on your application which does in fact happen very often. It also prevents discrimination based on gender, it stop’s unjustified rate hikes, and gives each patient the right to a rapid appeal. All insurers are now required to cover individuals with Pre-existing conditions.

What is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care act ‘s goals: The goals of the Affordable Health care Act is to expand the affordability, quality, and availability of private and public Health insurance options. PPACA will accomplish this through consumer protections, regulations, subsidies, taxes, insurance exchanges, and other reforms. The main fact that should be known basically is that PPACA will not replace private insurances, Medicare or Medicaid. It is in place to prevent discrimination based on ones healthiness and potential risks.

How Does the Patient Protection and Affordable Care act impact Dermatology: Through PPACA the only changes in Dermatology can be the amount that you pay should you have opted to change insurance plans. If you have kept the same plan then you can expect your usual schedule of fees. These fees’s can include your individual co-pays, Co-insurance, deductibles and out of pocket max. If you have specific questions about fees contacting your insurance carrier is the best way to stay in the loop.

PPACA’s intention is not to regulate your health care yet to regulate the health insurance companies and some of the worse practices that the for-profit health care industry witnesses. Since being enacted, PPACA has already saved Billions of dollars in health care costs for many seniors. At the same time, most of the new taxes associated with the costs majorly will go to High-earners, large businesses, and the Healthcare industry itself.
