Did you know that nearly 40% of people in their twenties now have at least one tattoo? According to statistics, one in eight Americans will have a tattoo in their lifetime. With its increasing popularity, dermatologists have noticed an increased amount of adverse skin reactions. Many pigments used in tattoo ink are industrial-grade colors and have not been approved by the FDA. The FDA has even found some inks contain metals or carcinogenic materials. This can lead to allergic reactions even years after the application of the tattoo. Some people also become very sensitive to sun exposure leading to sun burns. And unfortunately, if the needle used is not completely sterile, skin infections can occur which may lead to scarring.
Nobody thinks of these negative reactions when they are sitting in the chair and picking out their piece of artwork. But if you are one of the few unlucky ones to experience it, you will wish that you could reverse time. Well, unfortunately we do not have a time machine, but here at Natura Dermatology and Cosmetics we offer several tattoo removal options, specifically the AlexTriVantage laser, that will erase those unwanted tattoos that are affecting you and your skin.
There are various tattoo removal options: surgical excision, dermabrasion, chemical peels, cryosurgery and laser treatment. Although laser treatments, which are non-invasive and specifically target the pigment in the tattoo, is the tattoo removal option generally preferred by both patients and medical professionals.
The medical lasers used for tattoo removal function by sending an intense beam of light into the area of skin where your tattoo is located. The ink particles in your tattoo absorb the light from the laser, and the light’s heat breaks them up into tiny fragments. After a few weeks those fragments are absorbed back into your body. The Candela AlexTriVantage is the top of the line laser for tattoo removals. It uses three different wavelengths – 755nm, 532nm, and 1064nm – so it can treat a broader range of tattoo colors to ensure complete removal. Typically, darker colors such as black and red are easiest to remove and therefore require less sessions. Other colors such as green and orange are slightly more difficult to remove during tattoo removal and may require more sessions before full exclusion from the skin.
The laser treatments can be uncomfortable, but our office typically will numb the tattoo prior to the treatment to make it more comfortable. Initially once the treatment is performed, a light frost will appear over the tattoo coloring, and it may look darker. Once the fragments are absorbed, the coloring will lighten and fade. Additionally, the skin will most likely swell following the tattoo removal treatment. Individuals may opt for a cold compress to place on the treated site or may take antibiotics to avoid infection. The treatments are typically quick depending on the size. Obviously, the larger the tattoo, the longer the treatment. Most tattoos require multiple treatments which are spaced apart by six weeks. It is very important to keep the area being treated protected from the sun throughout the entire treatment process.
