Understanding Urinary Incontinence: Types and Causes

Urinary incontinence is a common condition that no one likes to talk about. If you are dealing with urinary incontinence, it can disrupt your life. Your dermatologist can help. Dr. Will Richardson at Natura Dermatology & Cosmetics in Fort Lauderdale, FL, offers comprehensive dermatology services, including treatment for urinary incontinence.

What You Need To Know About Urinary Incontinence

There are several factors which can lead to urinary incontinence, including:

  • Pregnancy
  • Aging
  • Menopause
  • Weight gain
  • Bladder conditions
  • Urethra and prostate issues
  • Nerve problems involving the bladder muscles

There are also several types of urinary incontinence, including:

  • Stress incontinence associated with coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, or lifting
  • Urge incontinence is associated with an uncontrollable urge to urinate
  • Overflow incontinence, related to incomplete emptying of the bladder
  • Total incontinence, associated with an inability to store urine
  • Functional incontinence is associated with a failure to get to the toilet before urinating
  • Mixed incontinence, which is a combination of at least two types of incontinence

You can take steps to help minimize urinary incontinence. It’s helpful to:

  • Do Kegel exercises every day to strengthen pelvic floor muscles
  • Urinate at set times to train your bladder
  • Increase the time between urination by 15-minute intervals to help hold urine
  • Lose weight to decrease pressure on your bladder and bladder muscles
  • Avoid caffeine, carbonated drinks, and alcohol to help minimize symptoms

At Natura Dermatology, Dr. Will Richardson treats urinary incontinence using the Emsella system. Emsella works using high-intensity focused electromagnetic technology, also known as HIFEM. The electromagnetic pulses cause the pelvic floor muscles to contract, strengthening them.

Emsella treatment is easy and completely painless. You remain fully clothed and sit on a specialized chair for about 30 minutes. The chair produces pulses that contract your pelvic muscles up to 11,200 times during a session.

An Emsella session doesn’t require downtime, so you can get back to enjoying your day. You may need a total of six sessions, which are scheduled twice each week. For best results, maintenance sessions are recommended every six to twelve months.
